Automatic Writing – An article about my personal experience with learning how to receive Divine guidance and messages through automatic writing.
I tried it, and it worked!
A few years ago, I came across Esther Hicks’ books and online videos about her experience channelling the ascended masters Abraham. I was very impressed by their wisdom and willingness to share valuable information with us. I was even more impressed by Esther’s extraordinary ability to connect with Abraham and transmit their messages.
At that time, I thought that she was special and that she was chosen. Esther did explain clearly how she connected with the non-physical entity, and I was fascinated. Needless to say, I wanted to have access to such a “channel” myself.
Well, when you ask for something loud enough, you get it sooner or later. Through reading and listening to books, blogs and podcasts, I learned that everyone has access to Divine wisdom and that no special skills are required.
There are many ways to do so ranging from hypnosis and deep meditations to automatic writing.
What is automatic writing?
In a nutshell, automatic writing is the process of writing down a message that comes from the Divine Source (i.e., Higher Self, guardian angel, ascended masters, angels, guides, etc.). It is something that your mind did not produce, but your hand wrote.
To write automatically, your mind needs to stay quiet for a few minutes and not interfere with the flow of information. Some people find it easier to do so through self- or guided hypnosis. Others prefer to write after deep meditation and while listening to theta-wave music or white noise. Some people even wake up in the middle of the night and write while their body is still too sleepy to interfere with anything.
Well, since everyone is different, it makes sense that everyone experiences automatic writing differently.
In this article, I share my experience with the process, including my mistakes and successes.
My learning curve
Since I had no idea what to do, I decided to start by reading about other people’s experiences.
The first material I came across was the Intuitive/Automatic Writing – 74-Minute Course by Dick Sutphen. Mr. Dick Sutphen is a well-known spiritual teacher and writer and has taught the material for more than 30 years. So, I decided to give it a try. [Note: I accessed the audio material through the Empower You application, for which I have a subscription.]
Intuitive/Automatic Writing – 74-Minute Course by Dick Sutphen
The method, presented by Sutphen is as follows:
- Write down a specific question on a piece of paper
- Through guided hypnosis, allow your mind to fall into an altered state
- Place your hand, holding a pen/pencil on the paper, and start writing continuous symbols OOOOO
- Relax and continue to write the O’s until you hand pick up a pattern and starts writing actual words and sentences
- Do not watch and read, although you may check quickly from time to time that you are writing on the paper (and not on the table)
I did as I was instructed, however, I was too scared of the hypnosis. As Dick Sutphen explains beforehand, it is very important to follow instructions clearly and not to try to exit the altered state suddenly. Or else, you risk getting stuck in between realms.
This warning made me too cautious and too careful not to do something wrong. Instead of relaxing and allowing the connection to happen, I was too concentrated on being careful. Anyway, I tried writing the O’s and at some point, my hand took off on its own. But when I “woke up” and looked at the writing, there was nothing. Just scribbles and not even one comprehensive word.
I was very disappointed and decided to try again in a day or two. After all, Dick Sutphen was a renown teacher and researcher.
Unfortunately, I was again too scared and couldn’t achieve any positive results with this method. Clearly, this method was not for me.
Automatic Writing Experience by Michael Sandler
I refused to accept the reality that automatic writing was not for me. So, I continued with my research and came across Michael Sandler’s book Automatic Writing Experience.
The method, presented by Michael Sandler is as follows:
- Meditate for about 15 minutes
- Listen to theta-wave music so your mind remains quiet for longer – access to such piece of music comes with the book
- Write down your invocation prayer – an excellent example is presented in the book
- Write down a prompt question – the book includes a series of questions to be asked within a 30-day challenge
- Start writing something, anything will do – at some point, you will start receiving thoughts that clearly are not your own. These thoughts are always loving and caring. Write them down as they come. Between these thoughts, write anything else (the book explains the method in a much better way and greater detail)
- Write for about 15-20 minutes every day during the same time (e.g., every morning)
- Initially, it takes between 7 to 30 days to establish a connection that provides meaningful messages
This sounded like something I would enjoy. So, I gave it a try.
ATTEMPT #1 – Complete failure
First, I read the book from cover to cover to gain a good understanding of the process and what to expect. I loved how Michael explains that it is preferable to try following the instructions strictly for a few days. If something does not work for a few days, then adjust it to make it better for you.
And so I did. I downloaded the music, bought a new and very beautiful notebook and started waking up at 5 am (as instructed). The reason for the early morning writing is that during this time of the day, everything is quiet (or at least quieter). So, the chance that you pick up other people’s vibration is lower.
During my first session, I discovered that the theta-wave music was rather irritating for me. I also discovered that when I lack enough sleep, I feel very cranky, and my mind is way too loud. But because Michael Sandler suggested trying for at least a few days before changing anything, I stuck with the original process for about 2 weeks.
During this time, I did not achieve anything. Not even one loving thought came into my mind or onto the paper. But, it was all my doing.
Instead of writing down random stuff and waiting patiently for the thought to come, I was writing with closed eyes expecting my hand to miraculously record profound wisdom. Please note that this is not what Michael teaches. Not at all. No wonder my first attempt was a complete failure.
Attempt #2 – Absolute Success!
Yes, I was again disappointed. But this time, I was disappointed in myself for not following the instructions strictly. So, I decided to put the project aside for a couple of weeks till I calm down.
After 2-3 weeks, I started fresh and from scratch. I did make some changes that proved immediately to be beneficial.
The changes
First, instead of waking up at 5 am, I was waking up at 6 am. Next, I made myself a cup of fresh coffee. The aromatic coffee stayed on the coffee table in front of me, so I could smell it (this is something that Michael advises against, however, it happened to work for me).
I replaced the theta-wave music with morning jazz and later with 432Hz relaxing music. I found it way more soothing and relaxing.
Next, I slightly changed the invocation prayer. In particular, I added a prayer by Kyle Gray, which he shared during an interview for Michael’s podcast.
My modified automatic routine was, and still is, as follows:
- I start with a 15-minute meditation on 432Hz relaxing music
- I have a sip or two of the coffee and let the feeling of awe continue
- I write down the modified invocation prayer, followed by the first question – I followed the 30-day challenge question from the book and these turned out to be the perfect learning tool
- I start writing greetings such as Good morning, Universe! Good morning, Higher Self! Good morning, guardian angel! etc.
- After just a few words, I start hearing my own voice responding with loving greetings and congratulations on my progress and willingness to connect with my Divine team
Yes, Michael Sandler’s method worked perfectly for me! Yes, I did modify it a bit, but it was worth it. In the beginning, I received just a few loving messages and encouragement. As I continued with the routine, the messages got longer, and more detailed, and were answering my questions clearly.
Additional tips
Now, I follow the same routine every morning. I ask different questions and receive clear answers.
In the beginning, however, I wasn’t sure whether the messages were Divine or simply my thoughts. To clear the doubts, I asked for signs, which I received in many forms and many times.
I also implemented another technique. I bought my first deck of Oracle cards named Ask Your Guides by Sonia Choquette. After my automatic writing session, I start shuffling the cards until one falls out. Always (without exception), the message from the card was in alignment with the message I wrote automatically. And, I never pull out the card, I always wait for it to fall on its own. What better proof than that ๐
If you are open to accessing the Divine Source of wisdom, I highly recommend you try Automatic Writing. And based on my personal experience, I also recommend you start with Michael Sandler’s Automatic Writing Experience book.
I changed my life by using this simple yet, powerful technique. And, if I can do it, so can you ๐
Give it a try, and let me know the results ๐
